Architectural shingle is what goes on most of Lee County, and the reason is straightforward: it is the cheapest assembly that meets current code, insurers price it without argument, and a damaged slope can be patched rather than replaced.

What decides whether you get twelve years or twenty-two out of it is nailing and ventilation. Six nails per shingle instead of four is what the higher wind rating actually depends on, and it costs a few dollars a square. Attic ventilation is the other half — an unbalanced attic in Fort Myers runs hot enough all summer to cook the asphalt out of the shingle from the underside, and no warranty covers that.

We install with the enhanced six-nail pattern as standard, we calculate ridge exhaust against actual soffit intake rather than assuming, and the foreman pulls shingles at random during the day to check the crew is hitting the nail line. That last one sounds petty. It is the single most common installation defect in the trade.

What is in the price

Six-nail enhanced pattern

Standard on every roof, spot-checked by the foreman during install.

Peel-and-stick across the deck

Full-field self-adhered underlayment, not felt with membrane in the valleys.

Starter strip and ridge cap

Purpose-made components, not cut-up field shingles, which is what fails first at the edges.

Ventilation balanced to the attic

Ridge exhaust sized against real soffit intake, with intake opened up where it has been painted or blocked shut.

Algae-resistant shingle as standard

Copper-granule AR shingle — the streaking on Florida roofs is algae, and it is avoidable.

Manufacturer warranty registered

Registered in your name, with the paperwork emailed rather than left on a truck seat.

How it runs

  1. 1

    Survey and colour

Measure, photograph, and leave physical samples. Shingle colour reads very differently in Florida sun than on a brochure.

  2. 2

    Permit

Filed with the product approval for the exact shingle and underlayment specified. One to two weeks in the county queue.

  3. 3

    Tear-off, re-nail, dry-in

Day one. Deck photographed before it is covered so you can see what you paid for.

  4. 4

    Cover, vent, sweep

Day two, then magnet sweeps and the paperwork pack including the mitigation form.

Questions on this one

How long does a shingle roof really last in Fort Myers?

Twenty to twenty-five years with correct ventilation, closer to fifteen without it. The manufacturer's thirty or fifty-year figure is a prorated material warranty measured under test conditions, not a service life in Southwest Florida sun.

Which brand do you use?

We install the major manufacturers and we are certified with more than one, which matters because certification is what unlocks the extended workmanship warranties. We will recommend based on the wind rating and the approval your specific roof geometry needs, not on what is stacked in the warehouse.

Does shingle colour affect cooling costs?

A little. A lighter or reflective granule will drop attic temperature a few degrees, which is real but smaller than what correct ventilation and insulation do. If cooling cost is the priority, metal is the honest answer, not a lighter shingle.
